United Kingdom car rentals

The United Kingdom remains one of the world’s focal points for business, culture and tourism and Americans are among the millions visiting Britain and Northern Ireland every year. Here, visitors can soak up some of the world’s most prominent and well-kept heritage and explore natural wonders ranging from pebbled beaches and ocean side cliffs to old-growth forests and rolling, snow-covered mountains.

Travelers’ favorites

The British capital of London is still the most popular destination in the UK and in addition to classic attractions like Buckingham Palace and Big Ben, this massive metropolis has become an international melting pot and boasts thriving nightlife and music, food from all corners of the world as well as England’s age-old traditions. Heading far to the north via train or car hire, the charismatic cities and mountains of Scotland can wow visitors for weeks at a time, while some R&R on the Channel Islands far to the south offer much milder weather and great holiday accommodations. Meanwhile, sports enthusiasts shouldn’t miss the opportunity to catch a soccer match in the football-crazy cities of Liverpool or Manchester.

Best time to visit

Most visitors heading to the UK opt for summer, which offers a warm, festive and welcomed break from the cool bleakness seen across the region much of the year. Spring can be quite scenic, less crowded and also comfortable in many areas, while with the exception of Scotland winters are mild compared to many continental US destinations. During the peak of tourism in July and August, it’s advisable to compare car hire and hotels in advance and book before traveling.

Driving in the United Kingdom

Despite the challenge of switching to left-hand driving rules, Americans are generally pleased with car rental in the UK. However, parking and traffic can be an issue in urban areas and if you’re not headed elsewhere, car hire isn’t really necessary.
