Ukraine
Ukraine car rentals
Despite the 2004 ‘Orange Revolution’ in Ukraine, this country is seen as very much one of Europe’s “deep track” destinations visited by only the most adventuresome. Nonetheless, Americans choosing to spend time here find themselves pleasantly immersed in a world that continues to rise from its turbulent past, moving to the tune of green cities, captivating architecture, a peaceful countryside and extinct volcanoes.
Travelers’ favorites
Ukraine’s capital of Kiev (Kyiv) is not only the country’s main entry point but is also the cultural heart for Slavic people and a fascinating place to while away a few days, thanks to its historic landmarks and charismatic architecture. Heading elsewhere via car hire, the city of Kharkiv has become a visitor favorite due to its student vibe, while cosmopolitan Odessa makes for an excellent seaside retreat complete with neoclassical wonders such as the Potemkin Steps. Meanwhile, those that prefer the outdoors will do well with some time in the Kara-Dag Nature Reserve, where wildlife and visitors meet amid a bizarre landscape of extinct volcanoes.
Best time to visit
Most regard the late springtime as the most ideal time of year to visit Ukraine; this is when temperatures are comfortable and the gardens are in full bloom. Summer can be extremely hot but just as festive, and autumn is also a beautiful time to visit before the dark days of winter set in. Mid-summer is the peak of tourism, so it is advisable book and/or compare car hire and hotel rooms ahead of time during this period.
Driving in Ukraine
Americans opting for car rental in Ukraine will find the same traffic rules as back home (right-hand drive). However, road conditions are quite poor in most areas outside of the country’s main cities and locals’ driving habits can be very erratic.
