Saudi Arabia
Car rentals Saudi Arabia
Despite being one of the world’s last ‘forbidden’ kingdoms, Saudi Arabia attracts millions of visitors every year, most of which are Muslims taking part in the Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca. Nonetheless, Americans visiting Saudi Arabia for any purpose are rewarded with a fascinating glimpse into centuries-old Bedouin culture, surprisingly modernized cities, beautiful seaside getaways and endless expanses of one of the world’s most intriguing deserts. Note that conventional tourist visas are not given for Saudi Arabia, and only religious tourism (for Moslems) and local tourism for nationals or expats working in the Kingdom is permitted.
Traveler favorites
While many visits to Saudi Arabia will begin in the fast-growing capital of Riyadh, many quickly head to Jeddah, which is set adjacent to the magnificence of the Red Sea and offers world-class hospitality and a surprisingly cosmopolitan and even Western feel. From here, a quick ride via car rental can take visitors to the center of Islam, Mecca, as well as to the equally holy and historically fascinating city of Medina just a few hours’ drive inland. Non-Moslems are not permitted entry to this ‘Holy City’. Among the country’s natural wonders, the thriving coral reefs of the Red Sea impress thousands of divers every year while the most adventuresome may opt for a glimpse of the Empty Quarter, one of Earth’s largest expanses of sand dunes.
Best time to visit
November to February is widely regarded as the best time to visit Saudi Arabia; this due to the scorching heat that prevails the rest of the year, which soars well above 100 degrees for weeks at a time in most locations. As such, rates rise accordingly, so be sure to compare car hire and hotel options before setting out. Most westerners also avoid Ramadan, when food can be difficult to find during the day, as well as the crowds during the Hajj.
Driving in Saudi Arabia
Like at home in the US, driving in Saudi Arabia is done on the right. One very important thing to note for car hire patrons is that it is illegal for women to drive. Roads are in good shape for the most part, except in far-off rural areas, and a US driver’s license is acceptable for temporary male visitors.
