Although Qatar is extremely traditional it is also quite modern and is fast becoming the most visited country in the Middle East. Its beaches, ruins, desert sand dunes and museums combined with its fine dining, excellent accommodations and fantastic markets make it a rewarding place for a holiday. Qatar has great relations with the US and Americans are welcomed here.

Travelers’ favorites

Doha is the modern capital city and a major gateway into this stunning country. It is also the most visited city and has excellent options for tourists. There are numerous museums and cultural sights and the seaside promenade is a main attraction. Its amazing Souq Waqif, eateries and excellent accommodations make it worth spending a few days here. North of the capital is Al Khor, which offers a similar experience but on a much smaller scale and is easy to find with a car rental.

Towards the center of the country is Qatar’s stunning desert and the famous Singing Sand Dunes are a must. Khor Al Udeid (Inland Sea) is also a good choice for a desert exploration. The cultural village of Katara is another favorite due to its beautiful beach and great cultural events.

Best time to visit

November to March is the most popular time to visit and this when the temperature is most bearable, especially in December and January. From June to September it can be uncomfortably hot with temperatures rising well above 100º F. The average American traveler may find it unpleasant, although most restaurants and hotels are air conditioned so it is easy to escape the heat.

Driving in Qatar

Roads are excellent in Qatar and gasoline is cheap making exploring by car hire an ideal way to travel. Car hire is also useful within Doha, however visitors should organize this ahead of time to ensure a car is available upon arrival. Prices vary, so it is recommended to compare car hire options thoroughly. An international drivers’ license is required to drive in Qatar.
