Car rentals Puerto Rico
Puerto Rico is a popular travel Caribbean destination and is a where the old meets the new. Its fantastic weather, stunning beaches, ancient Spanish forts and hip cafes draw many tourists here each year. It is part of the US commonwealth and therefore very accessible and welcoming to all American tourists.
Travelers’ favorites
San Juan is the vibrant capital of the island and has one of the best harbors in the Caribbean. It’s the main entry point for most visitors and its beaches, stunning forts, Palacio de Santa Catalina and excellent shopping will keep visitors busy for a few days; some spend their entire holiday here. Meanwhile, the costal city Ponce offers a similar experience but includes access to the uninhabited Caja de Muertos (Coffin Island).
Toward the west is the resort town of Ricon, famous for its superb surfing and relaxing atmosphere. Fajardo is another good choice and is one of the gateways to the tropical rainforest El Yunque National Forest while the nearby costal town of Luquillo is also worth visiting.
Best time to visit
December to May is the most popular time to visit, but it can get overcrowded and prices can rise quite substantially. June to November is the hurricane season and is avoided by most. If you arrive in November or May you may be able to avoid some of the crowds and get cheaper prices. Generally, temperatures range from 70˚F to 90˚F year round.
Driving in Puerto Rico
A car rental is unnecessary within San Juan but is excellent on the rest of the island. Most of the roads are great, especially the toll roads, however oddly enough road signs show distances in kilometers and speed limits in miles. Car rentals are mainly found at the airport where there are many options and tourists can compare car hire to find the most appropriate vehicle.
