The multicultural Panama City is the main gateway and is worth spending a few days in to experience life along the Panama Canal, which can be done by train or boat. The city’s historic Casco Viejo is an excellent way to witness the history of the country. North of the capital, and accessible by car rental, is the port city of Portobelo that is popular for its ruins and Fort San Lorenzo. It also has some fantastic beaches along the Caribbean Sea.
The magnificent La Amistad International Park is shared with neighboring Costa Rico and fantastic for hiking, as is Volcan Baru, which is Panama’s highest mountain. The mountain village of Boquete is a favorite to many as a result of its stunning natural surroundings. It is the gateway to Volcan Baru and the famous Quetzal Trail and easy to spend days here drinking local coffee, rock climbing and going horse back riding.

May to November is Panama’s rainy season although it is often sunny throughout early part of the day and is a great time to avoid the crowds. The temperature in Panama is pretty consistent year-round, with the days being in the 90s and the nights being in the 70s.

The roads throughout Panama are in good condition, making it easy to tour around by car hire. It is also a great way to visit areas that are not reachable by public transport and to really discover all of the beauty throughout the country. Defensive driving is a must to correspond with the locals. An international driver’s license is not required although it is recommended for hiring a car rental.
