Since the 1970s tourism in Oman has grown significantly and many adventurous Americans enjoy an off-the-beaten-path holiday here. It stunning landscapes, beautiful beaches and historic forts make it an appealing destination for over four million tourists a year, many whom hail from the US. Americans will find that it is well worth the journey via London, Paris, Amsterdam or Munich.

Travelers’ favorites

Muscat is the capital and the main gateway to the Sultanate. Its numerous forts, fantastic markets, excellent museums and the Grand Mosque make it worth a few days’ visit. A short drive to the impressive Wadi Shab is also a must and the UNESCO World Heritage Site Bahla Fort will leave all in awe. Both are reachable from the capital with a car rental.

Wahiba Sands is one of the most visited destinations, with its magnificent desert sand dunes and colorfully clothed Bedouin women. The Masirah Island is also a favorite and is where the best beaches can be found; many of these can be deserted at times. It is also known for its large turtles. Shalah is the capital of the south and is worth making the trip to for the annual Khareef Festival.

Best time to visit

The cool season is most recommended, as the hot season can see temperatures rise higher than 125°F. From November to March, the temperature is much more bearable for Americans and it is excellent timing as it coincides with the US winter. This is also the peak tourist season throughout the north and you should expect to pay higher prices for accommodations. The south is busiest during khareef season (monsoon).

Driving in Oman

Car hire is quite ideal in Oman since the road network is very good, especially throughout Northern Oman. A four-wheel drive is the most recommended way to explore the desert landscapes and is available through many car rental companies. It should be noted that women should wear a headscarf while driving around to avoid be being followed by local men. Additionally, drivers should be sure to bring plenty of water in the car.
