Oslo is the most famous city and also the largest. It is situated in East Norway where many of the great sights can be found including the famous mountainous area of Jotunheimen.

In West Norway you will find the magnificent fjords at Sognefjorden, which should be included on all itineraries. Nearby the equally impressive UNESCO World Heritage Site Nærøyfjord can be found, while Bergen is the gateway to the fjords and is also the second largest city in the country. It is also known for its fantastic music scene and cultural life and is a favorite for many travelers.

Best time to visit

Due to the Gulf Stream, Norway sees a temperate climate. Although it is never really hot it is known to have warmer temperatures in July and August, which is an ideal time for American tourists. Flowers are in bloom from May to September and in winter it can become unbearably cold.

Driving in Norway

Driving is a great way to explore this stunning country and most local motorists adhere to traffic rules. The cities can see some heavier traffic and consist of many one-way streets and almost all roads in Norway are in great condition. Car rental is expensive in Norway but well worth it for visiting the remote, untouched areas.
