Fast becoming a tourist hotspot, Nicaragua is the largest country in Central America and boasts stunning beaches, beautiful mountains, active volcanoes and freshwater lakes; it is no wonder why so many Americans come to enjoy a holiday here. Americans can enter without a visa and flights arrive directly from some of the US’ main air hubs.
Travelers’ favorites
Granada is the oldest city in the country and is one of the most visited in Nicaragua. Its streets are lined with stunning colonial buildings are there are six churches to be seen. Lake Nicaragua (Cocibolca) can be found on the northwest side of the city and is a great place to spend an afternoon. Close by is the rival city of Leon, which is home to the largest cathedral in Central America, Cathedral de Leon.
Found in Lake Nicaragua is the Island of Ometepe, which is a favorite of many. Meanwhile, those in good health should hike to the top of Volcan Concepcion or Volcan Maderas. The Corn Islands on the Caribbean side of the country are slowly becoming a known destination, although the diving community has been coming to these two beautiful islands for years.
Best time to visit
The dry season, from December to April is the best time to visit, although some days it can become very hot. From May to November is the wet season and visitors should expect to be wet much of the time. The mountains are always cooler than the lowlands no matter what season you travel and December to March tend to see the largest amounts of tourists.
Driving in Nicaragua
Pacific and Central Nicaragua have some good roads and a car rental is an ideal way to explore the stunning natural scenery throughout the country. The Caribbean side does not have such great roads and public transport may be best for touring around this area. Car hire is not expensive and there are a few well-known agents, making it easy to compare car hire quality and prices.
