Car rentals New Caledonia
Boasting stunning beaches, excellent diving and snorkeling, rugged mountains and delicious French cuisine, it is no wonder why over two million tourists visit this beautiful destination each year. Surrounded by the largest enclosed lagoon in the world, Americans will find it well worth the journey, which usually consists of a stopover in Japan or South Korea.
Travelers’ favorites
Noumea is the capital and largest city and is where the international airport can be found. It is home to the Tjibaou Cultural Centre and the Michel Corbasson Zoological and Forest Park and is worth spending a couple of days in. Also on the main island is the town of Hiéngène, which is a great place for exploring the island’s scenic mountains and waterfalls.
The barrier reef around the island is known to be the second largest in the world and a snorkeling or diving trip should be on all travelers’ to-do lists. The small island of Ile des Pins is also a favorite and is known for its white sand beaches, caves and tropical vegetation and can be reached by ferry from the capital city and you can also bring your car hire along.
Best time to visit
The semi-tropical climate that is found on the island makes the months between December and March the best time for visiting. It is also an ideal time for many Americans to escape the cold, although some may find it a bit too humid. Cyclones are most frequent from April to August and therefore most choose to avoid this period.
Driving in New Caledonia
Although a car rental is not necessary in the capital city, it is a great way to explore the rest of the island. Some of the more remote areas cannot be reached by any other means and the roads are in good condition throughout the entire island. A road map is essential, as some roads have no signs. There are plenty of options allowing visitors to compare car hire to best suit their needs.
