Amsterdam has become a household name and with good reason. Its stunning architecture, fantastic museums and appealing canals make it worth spending a few days here, and night owls will also find their fair share of excitement. The historic village of Harleem is less than a 30-minute drive away as is the town of Muiden, which is home to the beautiful Muiderslot Castle.
The Dutch windmills in Kinderdijk are a favorite and the large flower fields of Keukenhof make for some stunning photographs. The Hoge Veluwe National Park houses a fantastic museum and consists of gardens, sand dunes and grasslands. The coastal Zeelands is a great summer spot while Maastricht, the most southern city, boasts some magnificent architecture, excellent cuisine and great shopping.
Best time to visit
Americans can enjoy a holiday here at any time of year however most prefer to avoid the cooler winter months and chose to travel here in the spring and summer. The spring is a great time for seeing the flowers in bloom while the summer is ideal for visiting the beaches and strolling along the canals. From October to March, it tends to quiet down and is a good time to visit to avoid the crowds.
Driving in Netherlands
Within Amsterdam a car is not necessary but it is a great way to explore the Dutch countryside. The road network is excellent and easy to follow although be aware that there are many radar machines to check your speed. Parking is extremely easy to find and in many destinations it is free.
