Travelers’ favorites

The capital city of Maputo is located in the far south and is the country’s main gateway. It is a great starting ground for testing the local cuisine as well as strolling along the tree-lined streets and visiting its museums. From here, the popular coastal town of Tofo beach can be reached within a short drive as can the historical town of Inhambane.

Truly a remarkable place is the Bazaruto Archipelago. Consisting of five distinct islands, this is a must for all and is also known to have some of Africa’s best scuba diving. It is accessible through the resort town of Vilanculos, which is the water sports capital of the country. No trip to Africa is complete without spotting some wildlife, which can be done at the fantastic Gorongosa National Park, while the northern Quirimbas Islands are known for their history and some of the world’s best fishing.

Best time to visit

The roads are not great here; however, driving is possible, especially throughout the south. Car hire is available and a drive along the coastal road EN1 can result in some beautiful scenery. Some of the roads throughout the interior are best explored with a four-wheel drive vehicle. These can be found at car rental offices and are available to all holding an international drivers’ license.
