Podgorica is the country’s capital as well as its largest city and is well worth being on any itinerary. It is a great example of old and new and houses some great museums as well as a vibrant nightlife and excellent eateries. It is also just a 20 minute drive from the stunning Skadar Lake, which is also a must see and easy to do on a day trip with a car rental.

The coastal city of Kotor is a favorite of many and boasts some awe-inspiring natural scenery. Here, visitors will find the ancient city of Stari Gard of which the city has been built around. It also has some stunning beaches with a backdrop of cliffs that are climbable for those experienced. The coastal city of Budva is also a popular beach resort while the quieter Perast is well worth spending a day in and is reachable by car hire.

Best time to visit

July and August are the busiest along the coastal region and accommodations can become scarce. This can be avoided by visiting in May, June or September when the weather is still quite nice. Inland sees warm weather in the mountains throughout the summer months however it is known to be rainy, while it can become quite brisk throughout the winter months. In general, travelers should expect a dry summer and a rainy winter.

Driving in Montenegro

American travelers can compare car hire options in Montenegro; this is a great way to visit the different regions throughout the country. The roads are in good condition and the speed limit is generally 50mph unless posted otherwise. However, locals tend to drive fast. Americans will need an international drivers’ license and international third-party insurance is a must.
