The Mediterranean island of Malta has a British heritage, so the car rental is going to be right hand drive and for American visitors this is a slight drawback. However, it’s not a difficult island to navigate, and the roads are not that busy. The main city is Valetta and it is from here that most excursions originate. The affairs of the sea play a big part in the history of Malta, and the Maritime Museum is Vitteosa as one of the attractions for those keen on the islands traditions. But with 7,000 years of history behind it, Malta can also reflect on the rule of the Romans, the French and the English. There are museums covering the influences of all these island occupants.
Further out in the rural villages there is a relaxing ambiance which contrasts with the adventure sports available on the beaches and in the water. Scuba diving, jet skiing and windsurfing are all on hand for the active vacationer. The beaches of the Blue Flag Mellieha Bay, and Ghajn Tuffieha are great places for all sorts of water activities, whilst on the islands of Gozo and Comino there are the dramatic natural rock arches and more sandy beaches.
Best Time to Visit
The winters in Malta are quite mild and the island enjoys a typical Mediterranean climate. There are occasional winter dips in the thermometer readings, but those are matched by some excellent temperatures in summer. A typical day in the middle of the year will be in the mid 30’s, so as a winter or summer vacation destination, Malta has a lot to offer.
Driving in Malta
There are lots of car rentals in Malta so looking to compare car hire rates before the trip is well worth while. Driving laws on the island follow those of the British, so driving is on the left hand side of the road. Car rental can be arranged for collection at the airport or in the city, and national or international licenses are accepted.
