Car rental in Madagascar
Despite over 3,000 miles of coastline and one of the most unique microclimates anywhere, Madagascar is an island that has not fully realized its tourism potential. For Americans interested in the ecological aspects of travel, this is a place well worth the journey. Car rental can be arranged online or in the airport at the Ivato International Terminal and there are city depots which can be found when looking to compare car hire rates.
Travelers’ favorites
Much of the attraction on the island is the amazing wildlife and biodiversity as well as the superb beaches of the Indian Ocean. The traveler who wants to really get close to nature will love this French-speaking island. The top attraction is the rainforests of Andasibe-Mantabia National Park, which has a top elevation of over 5,000 feet. Here, the endangered species include the Red Bellied Lemur and a whole collection of Boa snakes. Plant life is also under threat so there is a good deal of conservation going on.
The marine parks provide the opportunity for responsible diving amongst the best coral reefs of the ocean and in Mananara Nord there are great marine attractions as well as exciting land based activities to enjoy.
Best time to visit
Madagascar is quite a humid island so any time of the year can result in some sweaty conditions. The rainforest regions are particularly wet and warm, so plenty of bottled water is required for walking trips. The driest period is between April and October, but out on the coast it’s a little drier and especially on the islands such as Nosy Be.
Driving in Madagascar
The roads here are fairly rudimentary and in the rainy season some are impassable. It’s also worth noting that many of the rental companies will want to provide a driver as well as car hire. This is normal on an island, which has not yet got to grips with the idea of independent travel. However, car rental drivers very knowledgeable and may prove to be well worth the small extra cost.
