Faroe Islands
Car hire Faroe Islands
Far off the northern coast of Scotland are the tiny Faroe Islands. They are a great place for tourists, particularly Americans, to go to during the summer. With unique landscapes, stunning mountains and odd-looking valleys, it’s an alien-looking place to go. The tourist season is very short, lasting only from May to September, so it’s best to compare car hire before you go to secure a vehicle as they are popular.
Car rental in the Faroe Islands is a great way to see the whole area during your stay. As there are many coves, caves and bays to seek out, most of which other tourists will never see, you can enjoy your trip more fully. Americans tend to fly to London or Glasgow first before taking another flight or a boat ride to the islands.
Best attractions to see
The dramatic, volcanic mountains and each of the islands are an attraction in themselves. There are numerous stunning little villages on the Northern Streymoy to visit, though the roads are rocky so an SUV might be a good choice.
The nightlife is very vibrant, which is odd for a group of small islands, but the locals really know how to enjoy themselves and the nightclubs get very busy. There are beautiful restaurants that overlook the ocean and plenty of great cafés, which are perfect to relax in. The main attractions are the mountains, such as the Slaettaratindur or Beinisvord. The Lake of Toftavatn is a wonderful place to spend your days, as are the beaches.
Best time to stay
From May to September is the only really good time to go to the Faroe Islands, and even then June and July are more favorable. The weather can change in an instant, and those from the States rarely expect such incredible climate changes. It’s worthwhile remembering this if you’re hiring a car, so take it easy when driving as the fog can quickly surround you making visibility next to zero.
