Car hire Dominica

The volcanic island of Dominica features a stunning mix of gorgeous beaches, waterfalls, large national parks and thermal lakes. There are tropical rainforests, beautiful villages and some of the best snorkeling spots in the Caribbean. Hiring a car is a great way to get around the island, and for American travelers, it’s best to compare car hire before you leave the States.

Using car rental, you can see the towns and villages such as Rouseau, Berekua in the south, Rosalie and Portsmouth. The roads are tremendously twisty but the speed limits are low and the drivers are considerate.

Island attractions

Hiking in the rainforests, visiting the Boiling Lake, swimming in the beautiful ocean by Scott’s Head and trekking in the Morne Trois Pitons National Park are just some of the favorite things to do among American tourists. Fishing and sailing trips can be arranged at almost every town. The coral reef is located just offshore and is thought to be one of the best in the Caribbean.

For adrenaline-junkies, zip lining, jet skiing, ATV tours and kayaking are all popular. There are festivals throughout the summer, which are fantastic events with food, music, dancing and lots of laughter.

Best time to stay

Being in hurricane alley, Dominica is susceptible to vicious weather systems during the later summer months so it’s best to avoid traveling then. Throughout the rest of the year, the weather is hot and dry, although expect flash-rainfall as it is located in the tropics.

During the winter months, temperatures are slightly more bearable and it’s more appealing to sunbathe in to catch a tan. The beaches tend to be quieter in February to June, so if you prefer total relaxation and quiet, this is a good time to go. Although a visa is required, it is possible to get one on arrival and it’s valid for one year.
