Bosnia and Herzegovina

Car rental Bosnia and Herzegovina

Despite its turbulent past, Bosnia and Herzegovina is a beautiful place to visit and more and more American travelers are heading there either directly or passing through when visiting Europe. Compare car hire before you arrive to ensure you get the best prices for a hire car. The roads are twisty, mountainous and few have barriers, so it’s best to keep concentration levels high.

Flights aren’t normally available direct from the US, although a stop in Paris or London will be welcomed after an eight or nine hour flight. The taxi drivers are notorious for overcharging foreigners, so car rental is one of the best ways to keep your dollars in your pocket. However, its important to remember that you will be stopped when driving the hire car frequently at road blocks, so remember to always carry your driver’s license, passport and any insurance documentation.

Hotspots for tourists

The Tito bunker is a great place to visit, although for most people looking for attractions in Bosnia and Herzegovina head for the water. There are rafting tours, canoeing and kayaking opportunities on offer, as well as mountain climbing. The Rakitnica Canyon and the Banja Luka River are both popular with tourists and were the location of the 2009 World Championship Rafting Tournaments.

During the wintertime, skiing and snowboarding are usually on the agenda, or at the lakes that are at the lower ends of the valleys fly-fishing is also very popular, particularly in Martin Brod, Bihac and Sanski Most.

Best time to go

With no visas required for US citizens and both summer and winter activities available, any time is a good time to go. The winters in Bosnia and Herzegovina can be severe, although are mostly wet nearer to the coast. The summers are hot, but not unbearable. There have been earthquakes in the past but there is no real pattern to them.
