Bonaire
Car rental Bonaire
Set in the Caribbean, Bonaire is a flat, mountain-less island filled with wildlife, great beaches, salt flats and due to its tropical marine climate, it’s a great place for American tourists. As the temperatures are persistently stuck at about 81 degrees, it’s a sunny place to visit all year round. Flights arrive non-stop from Newark and Houston, which is handy as it’s only a few hours away and many travelers take the boat across to Venezuela for that extra spice for their holiday.
Car hire in Bonaire is popular with Americans and as long as you compare car hire before leaving the States, it is a cheap way to get around the island. Tourists can circumvent the island in a matter of hours and because there are so many things to do and see, a hire car is a must.
Hotspots for tourists
The island is well known for its salt flats, but the abundance of wildlife is outstanding. Pink flamingos, rock art, iguanas and the Washington Slagbaai National Park offer unique sights. For the sporty people, kiteboarding, scuba diving, mountain biking and windsurfing are all popular, or for something a little calmer, bird watching, sailing and fishing are available.
There are only a handful of shops, from electronics, flowers, books and jewelry shops, so it’s not the most diverse of shopping places to visit. What’s more popular are the yummy restaurants that feature fried fish, soups, stews and lots of world cuisine.
Best time to go
Since there are almost no seasons, any time is a good time to visit Bonaire. The ‘rainy’ season is still hot and showers only last for a few hours a day, and in many cases, it’s a nice break from the intense heat. It’s best to try and avoid the cruise liner season, unless you’re arriving on one, as the shops, restaurants and hotels can fill up quickly.
