Car rental Belize
Located at the foot of Mexico, the former British Honduras colony of Belize is a popular place for American tourists to head to for some sun, sand and sea. With a strong Caribbean influence, it’s a stunning part of the world and being only a few hours’ flight from the southern states, travel time is low. Compare car hire before you fly as you can collect the rental car at Philip Goldson Airport.
Hiring a car gives tourists the perfect chance to explore the country, from rural Gallon Jug to Dangriga or the Big Fall in the south; there are plenty of diverse regions to visit.
Hotspots for tourists
The Maya ruins of Caracol, Lamanai and Aultun Ha are amazing, as are the stunning islands and dense jungles inland, which offer a weird and wonderful range of things to do. Being just a few hours from the USA, it’s amazing that this tropical wonderland is so close. Sport fishing off the coast is the country’s main attraction with the bonefish being the one to try and catch.
Scuba diving, cave exploration and jungle tours are all popular too, although simply relaxing in a laid-back way like the locals is just as enjoyable. There are also great museums that depict ancient Mayan practices and equipment. Sipping on local made rum or beer, and trying to sunbathe in the intense heat is also a common touristy thing to do.
Best time to go
Due to the tropical climate, it’s best to head to Belize in the dry season from February to May. The intense heat and humidity between May and November is frankly unbearable for those from the colder regions of the US. From June to November is the wet season, which brings floods to the coast, so it’s best to stay inland if you’re arriving at this time.
